Mental health
These lessons provide opportunity to promote pupils’ emotional wellbeing through developing an understanding of the risks associated with mental health. Pupils will gain an awareness of some of the most common mental health problems in young adults and develop the knowledge, understanding and confidence to seek help, as needed. The focus in this unit is also to break down stigmas associated with mental health and consider strategies to keep themselves healthy and safe, as well as supporting others who are facing challenges.

Philosophy for Children
Philosophy for Children follows an Enquiry based learning approach. It offers a way to open up children’s learning through enquiry and the exploration of ideas. Children learn that their ideas have value and that the ideas of other children have value too. Through P4C they realise they don’t always have to be right but they gain the confidence to ask questions and learn through discussion. It gives everyone a voice with all learners having the opportunity to genuinely enquire and gives pupils a chance to speak without the fear of getting the answer wrong. It entails a structured session with a stimulus to start and children then drawing on their imagination to ask a question and then to agree or disagree giving reasons to support answers.
Outcomes: to learn to think before you speak, value others views, learn respect and negotiation, not taking things personally, creates enquiring minds, develops listening and reasoning skill, builds personal confidence. Communication skills, co-operation skills and higher order thinking skills are all developed.
